Can I get a Hi, Hey, Hello and Howdy too!?
I’m looking forward to Administrative Assistant Office Professionals Week, How about You? What have you got planned?
Every year people on the air waves ask, what does being an Admin mean to you? Well, this year I’m changing things up. I’m asking what are you doing to develop a better YOU, the Administrative Office Professional? Becoming an amazing EA/ AA/ PA/OM/ Office Professional is not only about building strategic partnerships, it’s about developing yourself to meet the demand of that higher rung you are seeking to achieve.
You may not understand this media pic I’ve set as the feature picture, but it represents the layers of what happens behind the scenes in technology. The circuit carries the signal, the signal carries the code, the code makes up the apps and technology we use today to do most of our work. There are layers of communication that resonate the air waves so we can do our work. The Administrative Role is a similar mirror of work, there is so much that goes on behind the scene that no one sees.
Do you ever feel like your the story of the unsung hero? Yep, that story, the one where the recognition falls short and you feel taken for granted. Well, time to crawl out of the pity party, this is where you up your game and learn to speak up and out without bravado. Everyone works under these conditions most of the time. The company and team will know you are going the extra mile to create an environment where people are respected, appreciated, where the focus is on customer service, because you’re bringing a positive attitude every day. Attitude is everything, it is a soft skill. It is a Learned behavior, not one you fake, but one you embrace. If you can’t embrace it, your in the wrong field.
Our work has a direct personal connection. Great customer service is all about the the small stuff, special touches, final displays. For Assistants, it’s mostly about getting people to and from where they need to be and making sure they have a seat when they get there. And, then there is the creative side. I’m no Martha Stewart, but I love being creative. These things don’t have to be perfect, like something out of a die cut. If you have the die cut, well, that is a bonus.
Admins will often do things no one asked them to do, out of the goodness and creative aspect of who they generally tend to be. Handing out special necklace badge holders to new Admins (Rita Houseman ~ Thank you), because the standard ones pull your hair and rug burn your neck. Laminating bookmarks for a team building and development exercise because all the tools were there to use and make it more memorable so it won’t be “just another training exercise”. Going the extra mile doesn’t have to cost you anything. Take what is around you and build on it, develop it, create it, OWN It!
The “what’s in it for me attitude” is not going to carry you through for very long. You don’t have to give all your time or attention to your work. Be strategic. If you see a ton of things you can do, make a list, pick items that will compliment what is going on in your organization at the time, or plan for a future event. Do things that are less time consuming. Do some of the work at work and take some of the work home. An hour of time, is for you to shine. So how do we make our work more visible? We filter it.
Sometimes we make life harder than it is, but really it is just another day, it’s all in your perspective. You have a choice of how to look at it, even under duress. This is the beauty of emotional intelligence, the soft skill that generates motivation, the attitude the glass is half full not half empty, the ability to filter life. It is a balance, one people walk everyday and achieve greatness in their work, because they have the professional savvy to identify the battles worth fighting and “Where Advancing Your Carer Matters.”
Do you know what it takes to have these skills? Training. What battles will you win? So what’s if going to be? What are you going to do to develop your self going forward?
Come join us for a 4 week soft skills workshop and start picking your battles more wisely. http://officemvps.com/career-training-soft-skills-workshop/
