It’s true, it’s a biological fact that when we feel good about ourselves it resonates through our voice.
Who doesn’t feel good and energetic when we are dressed up and ready to go? The “Dress For Success” Mantra rings through on so many levels and has been scientifically proven to hold a positive association with the said clothed wearer.
In a 2015 paper published in the Social Psychological and Personality Science Journal, proved that people who wore more formal outfits performed better on cognitive tasks.
In a 2012 study from Northwestern University coined the term “enclothed cognition” to illustrate the psychological effect clothing has on its wearer.
Talking on the phone is a cognitive task. Thus, “dress for success” works anywhere, even at home.
Don’t be this:
On the next phone interview make sure to get dressed up. No, not your prom dress, spandex, or night on the town get-up, remember this is a potential employer. Even if you were a moving company or jazzercize instructor, be professional. Groom yourself as if you were interviewing in person. This preparation stimulates the energy that projects through even the most distant device and your voice is the only common denominator holding the conversation together. Make it sound like your ready, because you’re “Dressed-4-Success”.
Today I had a phone interview. I put on makeup, wore a blouse, slacks and even put my shoes on so I would feel I was present in the conversation. It certainly made the difference, because I was invited to an in-person interview. I’ll be ready. Try it for yourself.
